Program Description

1 or 2 Year Program

The Cosmetology program at the Technology Center of DuPage is a state-licensed, two-year career training program for students interested in beauty, fashion, and personal care services. It follows the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR) Cosmetology curriculum and leads to the 1,500 hours required for licensure. Students who successfully complete the program are eligible to take the Illinois State Cosmetology Licensing Exam. Students complete 1,500 clock hours of instruction through a combination of classroom learning and hands-on training in Salon 301, a full-service student salon open to the public. They must complete at least 450 hours in Phase 1 before advancing to Phase 2. Training includes haircutting, styling, coloring, chemical services, perms, nail technology, esthetics, makeup application, and client services, along with anatomy, chemistry, sanitation, safety, ethics, and business practices such as client relations, marketing, and salon management. Instruction includes lectures, demonstrations, practice, and real client experience. Students may also participate in internships, community events, fashion shows, theatrical productions, and service projects. Up to 50 hours of dual college credit through the College of DuPage is available at no additional cost. Additional fees apply for professional kits and required summer coursework. Students must meet academic and practical requirements, including written and hands-on assessments, to progress and complete the program successfully. Graduates earn a Technology Center of DuPage certificate and leave with strong technical skills, professional experience, and a foundation for careers in cosmetology, esthetics, nail technology, salon management, and related fields.
