Multimedia & Television Production
The Multimedia, Motion Picture & TV Production program at the Technology Center of DuPage welcomes both entry-level and advanced students who are passionate about storytelling, production, and digital media. Students learn how to bring creative ideas to life through hands-on experience in every phase of production — from concept development and shooting to post-production editing and delivery.
Entry-Level Students (Year 1)
First-year students explore the fundamentals of filmmaking, television production, and digital media creation. They gain practical experience using professional cameras, lighting, audio, and editing equipment while developing essential on-set and post-production skills.
Students who successfully complete the first year have the opportunity to earn nine dual college credits through the College of DuPage.
Advanced Students (Year 2)
Advanced students take their skills to the next level through client-based commercial video projects. Working as part of a production team, students collaborate with real businesses and organizations to produce professional marketing videos that are actually used to promote the client’s brand or service.
This second-year experience provides the opportunity to earn an additional three college credits and valuable industry-level experience that strengthens both portfolios and resumes.
Advanced Placement Option
Incoming students with prior experience in filmmaking or multimedia production may apply for direct placement into the advanced level. Applicants must submit a portfolio that demonstrates technical proficiency, creativity, and the ability to work collaboratively in a client-based environment.
Whether you’re just beginning your creative journey or ready to take on professional-level projects, the TCD Multimedia, Film & TV Production program provides the skills, experience, and industry connections to help you succeed in today’s media landscape.
Second-Year Development
Advanced students deepen their production and leadership skills through coursework in advanced screenwriting, scheduling and budgeting, field and multi-camera production, and editing and finishing techniques. They also develop career readiness skills through employment preparation, résumé and portfolio development, and professional internships with real clients in the industry.
Curriculum Topics
The Multimedia, Film & TV Production program provides students with a strong foundation in the creative and technical aspects of media production. The topics below highlight the essential skills covered throughout the program. This list represents the scope of instruction but may evolve each year based on industry standards, technological advancements, and professional feedback. Production & Pre-Production Processes
Students learn the complete workflow of creating a film or video project—from concept to production. Instruction includes scriptwriting, storyboarding, lighting design, and set design, as well as the responsibilities of key crew positions such as directing, camera operation, and acting.
Camera Composition & Studio Operation
Students gain hands-on experience using professional camcorders and Blackmagic Digital Mirrorless Camera and cine-prime lens. They also operate the Blackmagic Design Studio Pro camera and ATEM Television Studio Switcher to master live-studio production techniques.
Non-Linear Editing & Motion Graphics
Post-production skills are developed through industry-standard software, including Adobe Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve, After Effects, and Photoshop. Students learn to edit footage, add graphics and motion elements, color grade, and prepare final deliverables for clients or broadcast.
Studio & Field Lighting
Students explore both studio and location lighting techniques using ARRI tungsten lighting and LED lighting systems. They learn to shape mood, texture, and depth through the creative use of light and shadow.
Sound Recording
Audio is a critical component of production. Students work with RØDE microphones, Zoom recorders, and digital soundboards to capture high-quality sound in both studio and on-location environments.
Grip & Gaffer Equipment
Students will gain practical experience with a wide array of essential grip tools crucial for achieving dynamic camera movement and stability in film production. Participants will learn to handle professional-grade equipment such as sliders for smooth lateral motion, gimbals for stabilizing handheld shots, dollies for versatile tracking shots, and cranes for high-angle perspectives. Through guided exercises and real-world scenarios, students will develop the skills needed to seamlessly integrate these tools into their projects, ultimately elevating their cinematography to a professional level.
