Cosmetology Class Overview

Turn some heads! Are you always getting compliments on your own style and fashion sense?  Why not turn what you love into a career?

A student who successfully completes 1500 clock hours of work in TCD’s state-licensed School of Cosmetology and passes the practical exam will be awarded a certificate from TCD and qualify to take the Illinois State License Exam.

What will my classes be like?

Step behind a stylist’s chair in the Technology Center of DuPage “Salon 301,” and develop your skills in cuts, colors, perms, nail technology, esthetics, and make-up application. Through practice and instructor demonstrations, you will learn professional-level techniques.

There is a serious side to all this glamour! You will be amazed to learn how chemistry, anatomy, and geometry are used every day by cosmetology professionals.

Apply your skills through TCD's full-service salon, industry internships, or community projects (theatrical productions, fashion shows, and community service events).

It is possible to earn up to 50 hours of college credit through this program. After graduation, use that great head start to obtain an associate’s degree, adding even greater value to your state license.

CURRICULUM TOPICS

See the syllabus and recommendations page. This is not a comprehensive list of all available skills and goals, but given to show the scope of the curriculum. Changes may occur year to year based on industry input, change in focus, or other factors. Please contact the program instructor or coordinator for additional information.

TWO YEAR PROGRAM:

1500 documented clock hours over a two year period  are required to be eligible to take the Illinois State Licensing Examination -- these hours include summer hours between junior and senior year. Students enrolling for one year only (senior year) should strive to acquire 750 hours during that school year for a seamless transition to the College of DuPage Cosmetology program for completion.

Fees:

The total cost to complete TCD's two-year Cosmetology program is a little over $2000. This included the class fee for each school year, spring break session and summer session. These fees are the responsibility of the student; please contact TCD's Business Office or your school counselor if you have questions about these fees.
Compare this total cost to private cosmetology schools, which can run anywhere between $10,000 and $25,000, without the added benefit of college credit.

College credit:

TCD Cosmetology's dual credit (up to 50 hours of college credit) is offered at no cost to a student. The student is required to take and pass the College of DuPage Compass Reading test at the beginning of the year in order to enroll in dual credit.
