Heating,Ventilation, Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration

If a desk job isn’t appealing and you like a variety of new challenges every day, explore the opportunities for technicians in HVACR. The increasing emphasis on energy efficiency and air quality will require more skilled HVACR technicians as residential and commercial HVAC systems are upgraded, retrofitted, and replaced. Jobs are varied in this field: service technician, sheet metal fabricator/installer, TAB technician, and welder.  One day you might be working in a home, the next day a hospital, and the next day a power plant.

What will my classes be like?

This program is conducted in a “Real World” learning environment with residential and commercial HVAC equipment.  You will learn to troubleshoot, repair, maintain, fabricate sheet metal and install residential and commercial climate-controlled systems.

Course Goals/Objectives

Upon successful completion of the HVACR program the student will:
  • Demonstrate proper safety practices and procedures.
  • Understand the proper function and use of tools and test equipment.
  • Understand and utilize problem solving skills and critical thinking.
  • Demonstrate how to troubleshoot, service, and install HVACR equipment.
  • Develop the soft skills necessary for customer relations.
  • Obtain the EPA 608 refrigerant certification.
  • Obtain the technical and academic skills necessary to enter the work force or continue to a post-secondary program.

Program Selection Guidelines/Recommendations

We are confident that the Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration Program at Technology Center of DuPage is a positive and productive learning opportunity for DuPage County students. With this in mind, the following academic guidelines are recommendations intended to assist in scheduling students for success.
If a student considering Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration has questions about one or more of these guidelines, contact a guidance representative from the home high school to clarify individual situations.


Mathematics:  Students currently enrolled in or who have completed Geometry are likely to be effectively prepared to manage mathematics concepts required of students inthis program.
Reading/Writing: Students currently enrolled in or who have successfully completed English 10 are likely to have the literacy skills required of students in this program.
Attendance:  Students are expected to attend and effectively participate in program experiences to be successful in the Technology Center of DuPage experience. 95% attendance is expected of successful students in this program.
